Chapter 4 (Ryusei)

Izu Base

Aya: Understand? This isn’t a game, it’s training to prepare you for actual combat in a PT…

Ryusei: …..

Aya: It’s serious training, not playing.

Ryusei: OK, stop preaching. I’ve already heard this.

Aya: Then stop making that face at me!

Rai: Captain, you’re wasting your time on him.

Aya: Rai…

Rai: You can teach a fool, but you can’t make him think.

Ryusei: Hey! What’s that supposed to mean!?

Rai: You’ve died four times in today’s simulator training.

Rai: And yet, you haven’t learned from your mistakes…that’s what I mean.

Ryusei: I-I see…

Ryusei: W-Wait a minute…!

Rai: …Here’s my advice to you. Quit now, before it’s too late.

Rai: There’s no point in delaying the inevitable.

Ryusei: Wh-What…

Rai: Pack your things and go home. You’re wasting our time.

Ryusei: Why don’t you just shut up! I’m doing my–!

Aya: Stop it, both of you!

Ryusei: !

Aya: If you have time to fight, you have time to write a report on today’s training! Now go and do!

Ryusei: Y-Yes, ma’am. Ugh…Aya sounded just like my teacher…

Izu Base – Ingram’s office

Ingram: …Performance efficiency is 34% lower than expected.

Ingram: It’s been two weeks since the team was formed…yet they’re still not working together.

Aya: I’m sorry, sir. Rai has suggested that I change our formation.

Ingram: You’re aware that we’re running out of time?

Aya: Yes. I promise we’ll be ready for the R-Series rollout.

Ingram: Very well… We’ll begin the Torishima Sea drill tomorrow as scheduled.

Aya: Yes, sir. We won’t let you down this time.

Chapter 4: Fear Game

*Command Module appears*

Ingram: Let’s begin the training exercise in the bay area. You will seize a virtual enemy base there.

Ingram: Take note, these Gespents MK II’s from the Far East Brigade are modified…

Ingram: Because Japan is surrounded by the ocean, these mechs can handle underwater combat.

Ingram: However, take care when using certain energy-based weapons, such as Mega Beam Rifles…

Ingram: They won’t be as powerful when used on an underwater target. Keep that in mind.

Ryusei: Let’s see…I have an M950 Machine Gun, so no problems there…

Ryusei: Are there any blades that can be used underwater for my PT?

Ingram: Yes, you can equip a Steel Knife. It won’t have the same limitations as your Plasma Cutter.

Ryusei: Alright! These drills are killing me. Let’s do it right this time!

Rai: What gives YOU the right to say that, considering you still haven’t mastered on-shore training.

Ryusei: (Uh…I can’t argue with that…)

*Alarm sounds*

Ryusei: !?

Ingram: What is it?

Crew: We’re receiving a distress signal, Major.

Ingram: Who’s sending it?

Crew: Carrier T5 of the 3rd Special Air Logistics Team, sir.

Ingram: What’s the situation?

Crew: It’s being attacked by unidentified bogeys 30 clicks southwest of the coast.

Aya: Unidentified bogeys…could it be the Aerogaters?

Ingram: …Halt the exercise. Direct the T5 to this area.

Ingram: Aya, Rai, switch out the paint rounds in your weapons with live ones. Prepare to support the carrier.

Ingram: If the unknowns prove to be hostile, you are free to fire at will.

Rai: Roger that.

Ryusei: Major, what should I do…!?

Ingram: Nothing. You’re not used to handling an actual PT. Plus you’ve only been trained for land combat.

Ryusei: Wait a sec, I…!

Rai: …Stop. If you go into battle with your current level of skill, you will die.

Ryusei: Wha…

Rai: One mistake could cost you your life. And unlike a simulator or video game, there is no reset button.

Rai: One mistake could cost you everything…

Ryusei: …..!

Ingram: …Very well. Ryusei, I’ll allow you to sortie.

Aya: Major!

Ingram: Sooner or later, he’ll have to enter live combat.

Rai: (He COULD learn a lot from this… But it’s too dangerous.)

Ingram: However, if you don’t follow orders…you’ll be kicked off the SRX Team.

Ryusei: Huh…!?

Ingram: In a battle, you’re not just responsible for your own life.

Ingram: Any mistake you make could cost your teammates their lives.

Ryusei: …..

Ingram: Can you shoulder that responsibility and follow your orders?

Ryusei: I’ll do it…I’ll show you I can!

Aya: Ryu…

Rai: (Bah…whatever.)

Ingram: …Alright then. Aya, Rai, Ryusei…the three of you will work together to complete your mission.

Aya: Y-yes sir.

Rai …As you say.

Ryusei: Roger…!

Ingram: Now, make sure you equip that M950 Machine Gun.

Ingram: It’s quite powerful, both on land and under the water.

Ryusei: (…So I select Weapon, then Equip, then an M950 Machine Gun.)

*Got Steel Knife, Got M950 Machine Gun x2, Preparations Screen, Ryusei, Rai and Aya deploy*

Crew: T5 is approaching the vicinity!

*Tausenfessler appears*

EFA Pilot: Lt. Irm, I can’t shake them!

Irm: Haha, what a welcome. They jumped us right after we finished descending…

Ingram: T5, please respond. This is Major Ingram Prisken of the Far East Brigade.

Irm: !

Ingram: I have a team of PTs at the ready. They will distract the enemy while you flee the area.

Irm: Thanks, Major. Sorry for the trouble.

Ingram: Aren’t you…?

Rai: Lt. Jg. Irmgard Kazahara, correct?

Ryusei: What? Do you guys know him or something?

Ingram: Irm… What are you doing here?

Irm: Long story short, I ended up coming back from Mao Industries…

EFA Pilot: It’s no use, sir! They’ve caught up!!

*Enemies appear*

Unknown Pilot: Tenzan, fall back! We can’t risk losing anyone else!!

Tenzan: Shut yer trap. It’s finally getting good!

Unknown Pilot: You can’t let them see your mech yet! Now do as I say!

Tenzan: It’s too late. Didn’t you know I’m testing this Lion per Bian’s request?

Tenzan: If you’ve got a problem with that, take it up with Adler!

Unknown Pilot: Why, you–!

Tenzan: Aw, quit your whining, you’re making me hungry.

Unknown Pilot: H-Hungry!?

Tenzan: Let’s just shoot down the carrier and get our prize.

Unknown Pilot: No, Tenzan! You’re not authorized to engage!

Tenzan: Fiiiine,I’ll kill them all! That should solve the problem!

Unknown Pilot: Don’t be a fool! What if THEY shoot YOU down!?

Tenzan: Well, this Lion is still a test model. I guess that would be really bad…

Ryusei: H-Hey! That fighter jet has arms and legs!

Aya: Could it be a Personal Trooper!?

Rai: There shouldn’t be any PT that’s capable of solo flight…!

Ingram: All units, divert the enemy until the carrier gets away from here safely.

*Line of safety shown on map*

Irm: Sorry, Rai…I’m counting on you here.

Rai: Affirmative, sir.

*Victory, Defeat and Mastery conditions shown, gameplay starts*

*Tausenfessler gets attacked*

EFA Pilot: Aaahhh!! W-We’re under attack!

Irm: Calm down! Perform an evasive manuver!

EFA Pilot: Y-Yes, sir!

Irm: (Tch…If we’re hit, the cargo could be damaged again.)

*Tenzan attacks and the Tausenfessler is (most likely) damaged*

Ryusei: T-That flying robot is attacking the carrier…!

Rai: Then it must be hostile.

Ingram: All units, you are clear to fire at will.

Rai: Roger that.

Aya: Yes, sir!

Ryusei: Y-You mean…live combat…!?

Rai: What’s the matter, Ryusei? …You aren’t scared, are you…?

Ryusei: N-No!

Rai: Live combat’s not like a game or the simulator…

Rai: If you want to live, stay behind me.

Ryusei: Rrrrgh, whatever!

Tenzan: Wait, what’s wrong with that PT…? It’s moving kinda funny.

Unknown Pilot: Tenzan, the EFA’s PTs are in attack formation! We should retreat!

Tenzan: …No, let’s try some anti-PT combat. I’ll be able to collect data from that.

Unknown Pilot: Wh-What!?

Tenzan: (Also, I’ve only ever fought PTs in the game.)

Unknown Pilot: Tenzan! We can’t be seen by the Feds!

Tenzan: I told you to shut up!!

Unknown Pilot: !

Tenzan: I’m going to love it! It’ll be just like the game!

Tenzan: Plus, how can we go back without the cargo that carrier has?

Unknown Pilot: Rrrr…!

Tenzan: Now, attack the carrier and those PTs!

{Ryusei VS Tenzan}

Ryusei: He’s coming towards me!!

Tenzan: Haha…are you scared? Or just an amateur?

Tenzan: Sweet, my first PT kill mark! Gotcha!

{After combat}

Ryusei: S-Somehow…I managed to survive…

Tenzan: Tch, I missed? Funny…his movements remind me of Burning PT.

Tenzan: …..

Tenzan: Hmph, it can’t be…

Ryusei: S-So…this is real combat…I’m really fighting another human…!?

Tenzan: Don’t think I’ll hold back ‘cuz you’re a rookie!

Ryusei: !! I’m not going out like this!!

{Ryusei VS Tenzan 2nd}

Tenzan: Hey, I know you’re afraid to die…

Tenzan: But you gotta make this a little more exciting for me!

{Tenzan VS Rai}

Rai: This machine…It’s not a PT after all. It’s an entirely different type of mech.

Tenzan: Wellll, looks like the feds actually have a pilot with a backbone.

{Tenzan VS Aya}

Aya: If I’m going to protect Ryu, I have to stop this guy…!

Tenzan: What the heck? This one moves like an amateur, too.

Tenzan: With rookies piloting their PTs, there’s no way the feds can win!

*Tenzan shot down*

Tenzan: Tch, I lost? Oh, I forgot…this is only a test model.

Tenzan: Well, I’ve gathered enough data for now. I’m hungry, let’s go.

*Tenzan shot down by Ryusei*

Ryusei: D-Did I do it…!?

Tenzan: Ahh…Game over. I’m through playing with you.

Tenzan: Oh, I almost forgot…this is only a test model.

Tenzan: I’m hungry, see ya!

*Tenzan retreats*

*Map Cleared*

Irm: Wow…we survived.

Irm: Major, Rai, I’ll see you back at the F.E. Base.

Ryusei: (…..)

Ryusei: (…That pilot…he escaped…)

Ryusei: (…But, if it had been me…)

Ryusei: (…I wonder…if I could have survived all that…)

Izu Base Hangar

Aya: You worked hard today, Ryu.

Ryusei: But I…

Aya: …You didn’t do anything foolish or violate your orders.

Rai: …That’s expected of every soldier. Still, it looks like our team won’t be disbanded.

Ryusei: …..

Rai: I’ll be honest, I thought you were all talk. But you didn’t freeze up or run away.

Ryusei: Rai…

Rai: …Follow your orders, keep a cool head, and fight with all you’ve got. That’s your best chance at survival. However, other than that…

Irm: …As strict as ever, Rai.

Rai: Lt. Irm…

Irm: Long time no see. How’s your left hand…used to it yet?

Rai: …Yeah.

Ryusei: (Used to it…? What does THAT mean?)

Irm: You must be that rumored civilian recruit….Ryusei Date?

Ryusei: Y-Yeah.

Aya: …Aya Kobayashi. I’ve heard about you, Lt. Irm.

Irm: About me?

Aya: Yes. You were a member of the PTX Team, of which Major Ingram was captain…

Aya: And you’re the son of the Tesla-Leicht Institute researcher, Dr. Jonathan Kazahara.

Irm: My, you certainly know a lot about me.

Aya: ?

Irm: Here’s my D-Con number. Give me a call whenever you feel like it.

Aya: O-Okay…

Rai: …I see you haven’t changed, Lieutenant.

Irm: I’m only trying to be courteous. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to report to Major Ingram.

Rai: About those unknown hostiles?

Irm: Well, possibly. But there’s more trouble than that going on.

Rai: …..

Far East Brigade HQ

Ingram: …I heard the Raubtier was scrapped because of an accident during the test.

Laker: No. I had Mao Industries repair it in secret.

Irm: I brought the restored Wildraubtier back from the Moon, Major.

Ingram: I see. But, isn’t there another reason you returned?

Irm: Uhh…

Ingram: Perhaps, you flirted with some girl and angered Ring?

Irm: (H-He’s as sharp as ever…)

Hans: But Commander…although it’s repaired, the Wildraubtier is still defective. I can’t agree to using it again.

Hans: Operating it could result in another accident…like the Huckebein.

Irm: (Whatever. It’s your fault that Kyosuke suffered…)

Ingram: We’ll examine the Wildraubtier and modify it accordingly.

Ingram: If that’s all right with you, Lt. Col.?

Hans: Hmph…do as you please.

Laker: Now, about those enemies who attacked the T5 Carrier…

Ingram: Those winged mobile weapons aren’t the same as our PTs.

Hans: Could they be the same ones that recon encountered?

Ingram: I analyzed the visual data. They weren’t AGX-05 models.

Hans: I see…

Laker: …May I hear your opinion, Major Ingram?

Ingram: The humanoid mobile weapon was modeled after an F-32, or another similar fighter jet.

Laker: But, there are only a few companies capable of manufacturing humanoid-type mechs.

Ingram: True. There’s the developer of the Personal Trooper, Mao Industries…

Ingram: And the Tesla-Leicht Institute in North America that made the Grungust…

Hans: Do you think it’s possible that TLI made the unknown humanoid-type?

Hans: Their scientists are known for making extraordinary mechs.

Irm: (Of course he thinks that. The Grungust Type-0 is just amazing.)

Laker: Lt. Irmgard…your father created the Grungust for TLI.

Irm: Yes, that’s correct, but…

Laker: Well, has he said anything?

Irm: No sir. And if TLI had made the winged mech…

Irm: My old man would’ve drove me nuts bragging about it.

Laker: Then, that leaves just one man…

Ingram: The founder of TLI…and the leading expert on EOT research, Dr. Bian Zoldark…

Ingram: The head of the Extra-Over Technology Institute.

Laker: …..

Hans: …..

Irm: …..

Laker: (Bian Zoldark…and the EOTI…)
